AI Background Remover
Cut people out of photos automatically with an AI model that runs on your own device.
How to use: Choose a photo of a person. The AI finds them and removes the background; adjust the edge sliders, pick transparent, colour or blur, then download.
Runs Google’s open-source MediaPipe Selfie Segmenter on your device. About 12 MB downloads once, then it is cached. Best for people and portraits.
How to use the AI Background Remover
Removing a background by hand takes time and a steady mouse. This tool uses a small machine-learning model, Google’s open-source MediaPipe Selfie Segmenter, to find the person in a photo automatically. Unlike most online background removers, the model runs inside your browser, so your photo is never uploaded and there are no credits, watermarks or sign-ups.
Choose a photo and the tool loads the model (about 12 MB the first time; after that your browser caches it) and processes the image in a second or two. The result appears on a checkerboard, which means transparent. Use Edge threshold to include more or less of the person and Edge softness to make the cut-out sharper or smoother around hair. You can also replace the background with a solid colour or a blurred version of the original, like a portrait mode photo.
Download the result as a PNG, which keeps transparency for use in slides, thumbnails, profile pictures or designs.
Be aware of the limits: the model is trained on people, so it works best on portraits, selfies and full-body shots with a clear subject. For products, logos or signatures on a plain background, the colour-key Background Remover usually gives cleaner results. Very fine hair and busy backgrounds may need a little touching up.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and runs on your device. The photo never leaves it.
Why does it only work on people?
The model was trained to separate people from backgrounds. For objects on a plain background, use the colour-key Background Remover.
Is it really free?
Yes. There are no credits or watermarks, because no server does the work; your own device does.
