Short answer

As a rule of thumb, a standard page with 12-point Times New Roman and 1-inch margins holds about 500 words single-spaced or 250 words double-spaced. Larger fonts, wider margins, headings and short paragraphs lower that number. For exact limits, count words rather than pages.

Teachers, publishers and employers often set limits in pages, while writing tools count words. Converting between the two is useful when you are planning an essay, checking a cover letter or estimating how long a speech will take. There is no fixed answer, because the number of words on a page depends on formatting, but the common estimates below will get you close.

The quick answer

These estimates assume a US Letter or A4 page, 12-point Times New Roman, 1-inch (2.5 cm) margins and normal paragraphs:

PagesSingle-spacedDouble-spaced
½ page≈ 250 words≈ 125 words
1 page≈ 500 words≈ 250 words
2 pages≈ 1,000 words≈ 500 words
3 pages≈ 1,500 words≈ 750 words
5 pages≈ 2,500 words≈ 1,250 words
10 pages≈ 5,000 words≈ 2,500 words

So a 1,000-word essay is about two pages single-spaced or four pages double-spaced, and a 500-word essay is about one page single-spaced.

Going the other way: words to pages

A 1,500-word article is about three pages single-spaced. A 3,000-word report is about twelve pages double-spaced.

What changes the number of words per page?

Font and size

Fonts take up different amounts of space at the same point size. Times New Roman is fairly compact. Arial, Calibri and Verdana are wider or taller, so the same text runs longer. Moving from 12 pt to 11 pt fits noticeably more words; 14 pt fits fewer.

Line spacing

Double spacing roughly halves the words per page compared with single spacing. 1.5 spacing sits in between, at roughly 330 to 350 words per page with the settings above.

Margins and paper size

Wider margins mean shorter lines and fewer lines per page. A4 is slightly taller and narrower than US Letter, which changes the count a little.

Layout

Headings, bullet points, short paragraphs, dialogue, block quotes, images and tables all leave white space, so pages with lots of structure hold fewer words than solid paragraphs.

Why word count is better than page count

Pages are easy to manipulate with font size and margins, which is why many universities, journals, competitions and publishers set limits in words. If you are given a page limit, check whether formatting rules are also specified, such as font, spacing and margins. If they are, set up your document to match before you start writing.

Paste your text into the word counter to see the exact count, plus sentences, paragraphs and reading time. If your limit is in characters, for example for a social media post, meta description or application form, use the character counter.

How to set up a standard page

If your assignment asks for “standard formatting”, it usually means 12-point Times New Roman, 1-inch margins and double spacing. To set this up:

Both programs also show a live word count: Word in the status bar at the bottom of the window, and Google Docs under Tools › Word count (you can tick “Display word count while typing”). Once your page is set up, the page count you see will match what your teacher or editor expects.

How long does it take to read or say?

Word count also tells you how long text takes to read or present. Our word counter uses about 238 words per minute for silent reading and 150 words per minute for speaking:

WordsReading timeSpeaking time
250≈ 1 minute≈ 1 min 40 s
500≈ 2 minutes≈ 3 min 20 s
750≈ 3 minutes≈ 5 minutes
1,000≈ 4 minutes≈ 6 min 40 s
1,500≈ 6 minutes≈ 10 minutes

So a five-minute speech is roughly 750 words, about three double-spaced pages. Slow down for presentations with slides or audience interaction. For more detail, read word count and reading time.
