How to use the Discount Calculator
Shops love to advertise percentages, so it pays to know the real price. Enter the original price and the percentage off. The calculator multiplies the price by one minus the discount to give the sale price and shows how much you save in money and in percent.
Many promotions stack, such as “40% off, then an extra 10% with this coupon.” The second discount applies to the already reduced price, not the original, so two discounts of 40% and 10% do not add up to 50%. Enter both values and the tool shows the true combined discount, which in that case is 46%.
If tax is added at the register, fill in the tax rate to see the final amount you will actually pay. Tax is applied after the discounts, which is how most stores calculate it.
The calculator is handy for comparing offers. A smaller discount on a lower starting price can beat a larger discount on an expensive item, and seeing the final number makes the better deal obvious. It also works for markdowns when you are setting your own prices.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the price by the discount percent divided by 100 to get the amount off, then subtract it from the price.
Do two discounts add together?
No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the combined discount is always a little smaller than the sum.
Is tax applied before or after the discount?
In most places tax is calculated on the discounted price, which is how this calculator works.
