How to use the Sales Tax, GST & VAT Calculator

Sales tax, goods and services tax (GST) and value-added tax (VAT) are all percentages added to the price of goods and services. Shops may show prices with or without tax, so it helps to be able to convert in both directions.

To add tax, enter the pre-tax price and the tax rate. The tax equals the price multiplied by the rate, and the total is the price plus that tax. To remove tax, enter the tax-inclusive total instead. The net price is found by dividing the total by 1 plus the rate, and the difference is the tax portion. Simply subtracting the percentage from the total gives the wrong answer, which is a common mistake.

Use the quick buttons to fill in common rates, but always check the current rate for your country, state or product category, because many places apply reduced or zero rates to items such as groceries or books.

Business owners can use the calculator to prepare invoices, while shoppers can check that a receipt is correct. The results show the net price, the tax amount and the gross price side by side so you can copy whichever figure you need.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1 plus the VAT rate as a decimal. For a 20% rate, divide by 1.20.

What is the difference between GST and VAT?

Both are consumption taxes collected at each stage of the supply chain. The names and rates differ by country, but the calculation is identical.

Why is subtracting the percentage wrong?

Because the tax was calculated on the smaller net price, not on the total, so taking 20% off the total removes too much.
