In brief

Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame has once again become the highest-grossing film of all time, not adjusted for inflation, after a theatrical re-release pushed it just past James Cameron’s Avatar, CBC News reported.

Endgame’s worldwide total now stands at about $2.9255 billion US, narrowly ahead of Avatar’s $2.9237 billion. The slightly recut version, with about four extra minutes, returned to cinemas late last month and opened to about $86 million worldwide, according to Disney figures cited by CBC.

It is the second time Endgame has overtaken Avatar. It first did so in 2019, before a 2021 re-release of Avatar in China put Cameron’s film back on top. CBC noted that only two re-releases have opened higher in North American cinemas.

The re-release is building anticipation for Avengers: Doomsday, due in December, which is expected to bring back familiar stars including Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans.

Why it matters

The record is mostly symbolic, since ticket prices rise over time and the figures are not adjusted for inflation, but it shows how re-releases have become a powerful tool for studios to promote upcoming films.
