OpenAI Adds Visual Ads Next to ChatGPT Images

In brief
OpenAI is adding visual display ads that will appear alongside images users ask ChatGPT to create. The ads start later this month in the US only, with an initial test group of advertisers.
TechCrunch reported that the new ads will be clearly labelled and, according to OpenAI, will not influence ChatGPT’s answers. OpenAI first introduced ads earlier this year to support its free and lower-cost plans, and expanded them to India in August.
Alongside the new format, the company is expanding its advertising measurement tools and partner list, including several attribution and analytics firms, and is running brand-safety pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science so advertisers can judge where their ads appear.
The move comes as competition among AI chatbots intensifies. TechCrunch noted that ads could make free use less pleasant for some people, which may in turn encourage more users to pay for subscriptions that remove them.
Why it matters
Advertising is becoming a core part of how AI chatbots pay for free access. How clearly ads are separated from answers will matter for trust in AI tools.
